Insurance is a global industry that employees over 2.3 million people in the United States alone. Jobs are available in risk management and insurance. In recent years the number of graduates from the nation’s RMI programs met only 10-15% of the industry’s needs. The industry offers potential careers in a wide variety fields including claims, underwriting, actuarial sciences, sales, customer services, human resources, and information technology systems. Since there are so many career paths, there are also many different work environments. The potential work environments range from office, home, and field settings and can allow you to work hand-in-hand with customers or on individual assignments.

The Brantley Risk and Insurance Center has been awarded the Global Centers of Insurance Excellence (GCIE) designation by the International Insurance Society (IIS) for its highly ranked risk management and insurance program.

The designation is awarded to universities with outstanding risk management and insurance programs, and in selecting designees, the society considers such factors as accreditation, curriculum, involvement with industry and faculty qualifications. With 200 majoring students, Appalachian’s Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) Program is the seventh largest in the country.

Appalachian’s Brantley Risk and Insurance Center consistently ranks among the top risk management and insurance programs in several publications.  The Center is committed to developing the finest insurance talent and involves students with industry professionals many times throughout the year by arranging guest speakers, shadow days, and travel opportunities including the Independent Insurance Association of North Carolina (IIANC) Conference and the annual Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) Conference. The Center also holds an extensive career fair twice a year allowing students unparalleled access to employers regarding internships and full-time career opportunities. Scholarships are available for all RMI majors regardless of rank with approximately $80,000 awarded annually. A large number of committed donors have continued to make these scholarships possible.
